Coming off of their most recent win over the Dominican Stars, the UChicago Maroons are off to a 2-0 start on the season.
“We are clearly happy to start the season 2-0, especially with a couple of road wins,” stated head coach Mike McGrath on Thursday morning. “The team definitely has lofty goals for the season, so it is what we needed to do in these games.”
Outscoring the Stars 70-48, the Maroons allowed the lowest number of points to their opponent since their 109-46 win at IIT last year. They also led in the paint, 36-16, and held a 39-33 rebounding advantage. Junior forward Nate Brooks was the team’s leading scorer, totaling 20 points for the night, with junior guard Jordan Smith scoring 13. Freshman forward Collin Barthel grabbed a team-high seven rebounds as well.
During UChicago’s first matchup of the season against the Lake Forest Foresters, the Maroons came out on top, 75-68; the game closed out with a slam-dunk by Smith, finishing the night on an exciting note. Smith led the team in points with 27, adding to UChicago’s 58.1 field-goal percentage. Sophomore forward Blaine Crawford came up with 10 points and five rebounds, while junior forward Alex Voss led in rebounds with 11. The Maroons had a 40-27 rebounding edge overall.
“We shot the ball well from the floor and showcased the overall athleticism and ability we have,” Voss told the Chicago Maroon following the team’s win over the Foresters.
Last season UChicago went up against Lake Forest as well, defeating them 99-54.
On Saturday, November 22 and Sunday, November 23, the Maroons will take part in the Hoopsville National Invitational Classic. Starting at 1 p.m. and noon respectively, they will be taking on Worcester Polytechnic Institute and Stevenson. UChicago is hoping to keep their momentum going and continue their winning streak.
“The tournament at Stevenson will match us up with two very good teams that will test us much more,” explained McGrath. “The team has been focused hard on improving and working hard each day to prepare for games like these.”
