Q&A With Ryan Shearmire

Q: If you could only listen to one album for the next month, what would it be?

A: Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) by the Wu-Tang Clan. 

Q: What is your favorite sneaker of all time?

A: Nike Air Force 1.

Q: What is the best thing about your game, and what still needs improvement?

A: The best thing about my game is my passing and my pregame handshakes, I need to improve on my ball handling, shooting, defense, and rebounding. 

Q: What character from a television show or movie would you want to be best friends with and why?

A: Mark Cuban from Shark Tank because he’s living the life.

 Q: What do you love most about the game of basketball?

A: Being with the team.

Q: What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever gotten?

A: “You are never going to play in the NBA, study up,” -my dad.

 Q: What is your basketball goal for this season?

A: Win as many games as possible.

 Q: Where is your favorite place to eat in Hyde Park?

A: Harold’s.

Ian Joyce and Royce Muskeyvalley: A Senior Day Tribute

As the season comes to an end with the UChicago Maroons facing the WashU Bears on Saturday at 3 p.m. (away), the nek55w795rquagk8Maroons celebrated Senior Day at Ratner Athletic Center last Sunday. Ian Joyce and Royce Muskeyvalley will both be graduating this June, officially transitioning from current Maroons into alumni.

Joyce, a 6-foot-6 forward out of Middleton, Wisconsin joined the team as a freshman in 2011. He appeared in seven games, averaging 1.9 points and 7 rebounds. In games against the Kalamazoo Hornets and the Case Western Reserve Spartans, Joyce scored four points in three minutes of play.

In his sophomore year, Joyce played in 22 games and averaged 3 points and 2.7 rebounds, He came second on the team in blocks with 11, pulling down a season best six rebounds against Case Western Reserve. He scored nine points against the Brandeis Judges and the Rochester Yellowjackets.

f6z7fnrhdfiaaw31During the 2013-2014 season, Joyce was forced to sit out due to injury, and was also sidelined for the majority of this year. However, Joyce remained an integral part of the team, acting as a leader for the younger guys. A Public Policy major, Joyce has accepted a job in Madison, Wisconsin with First Business Bank, after graduation.

A 5-foot-11 guard out of Rock Island, Illinois, Muskeyvalley also joined the Maroons in 2011. He played in all 25 games and averaged 4.1 points, 2.1 assists and 0.9 rebounds. He ranked third on the team in assists with 13, and scored a season-best 16 points against Emory. He also had 12 points and 4 steals against the Hornets.

In 2012, Muskeyvalley was an All-UAA Honorable Mention. He started 23 out of the 25 games, and averaged 8.4 points, 3.4 assists and 1.8 rebounds. He hit double-digit points in 10 games and scored 18 against Rochester.

During his junior year, Muskeyvalley made Second Team All-UAA. He started all 25 games and averaged 10.1 points and 1.8 rebounds. He led the team in assists (92) and steals (34), as well as posted double-digit scoring in 11 games. His season-high was against Case Western Reserve, where he scored 24 points and also had 22 points and 5 assists against WashU. He made game-winning jumpers in ikih230j5ydfzzshthree games on the season.

Muskeyvalley missed this year due to injury but along with Joyce, continued to be a mentor to the rest of the team. Muskeyvalley majored in Political Science and will either do Teach For America or possibly return to campus to play next season, upon graduation.

 Q: What is your favorite sneaker of all time?

A: My favorite shoe to play in would probably be the Nike Air Max Fly By.

Q: LeBron James or Kobe Byrant?

A: LeBron.

Q: What is the best class you’ve taken so far, here at UChicago?

 A: The best class I’ve taken is Adolescent Development. 

Q: If you had to delete every social media account you have, except for one, which one would you keep?

A: Surprisingly, I have no social media accounts.

Q: If you could be anything in the world, what would you be? In other words, what is your dream job? 

A: I would like to be an engineer who creates useful inventions. 

Q: What character from a television show or movie would you want to be best friends with and why?

A: I’d want to be best friends with Nightcrawler from X-Men because he could teleport me anywhere I wanted to go.

Q: What do you love most about the game of basketball?

A: I like that there are so many aspects to the game that you can choose to excel at.

Q: Who do you play as in NBA2K?

A: I usually play as the Houston Rockets in NBA2K.

Q: What is your basketball goal for this season?

A: My basketball goal is to get healthy and back on the court.

Q: Where is your favorite place to eat in Hyde Park?

A: My favorite place to eat in Hyde Park is Kikuya Japanese Restaurant.

Q: What is your favorite sneaker of all time? 

A: Jordan XI.

Q: What is the best thing about your game, and what still needs improvement? 

A: Shooting and offensive rebounding.

 Q: If you had to delete every social media account you have, except for one, which one would you keep?

A: Snapchat.

Q: If you could be anything in the world, what would you be? In other words, what is your dream job?

A: An athletic trainer. 

Q: What is the weirdest gift you’ve ever received? 

A: Half of a bagel mailed to me by my grandpa.

 Q: What character from a television show or movie would you want to be best friends with and why?

 A: Stewie from Family Guy because I think he’s hilarious.

 Q: What do you love most about the game of basketball?

 A: The team chemistry.

 A: Kevin Durant.

A: “Don’t start something unless you plan on finishing it.”

A: If I could only have one album to listen to next month it would be “My Kinda Party” by Jason Aldean.

Q: What is your favorite sneaker of all time?

A: The Reebok Pumps.

Q: What is the best thing about your game, and what still needs improvement?

A: My ability to dunk and I need to work on scoring in the post.

Q: If you had to delete every social media account you have, except for one, which one would you keep?

A: Instagram.

Q: If you could be anything in the world, what would you be? In other words, what is your dream job?

A: To be a country singer.

A: Be famous.

A: Used socks.

A: The brotherhood of the team.

Q: If you could only listen to one album for the next month, what would it be?

A: Darius Rucker – Charleston SC 1966 

Q: LeBron James or Kobe Byrant?

 A: LeBron no question. I’m an efficiency guy so that eliminates Kobe.

 Q: What is the best class you’ve taken so far, here at UChicago?

A: Financial Accounting. Weird as it is, that’s the way my brain works so it really clicked with me.

 Q: What is the best thing about your game, and what still needs improvement?

A: Awareness and composure is the best part. All the physical aspects could definitely use improvement.

 Q: If you had to delete every social media account you have, except for one, which one would you keep?

A: Instagram. I don’t post but I enjoy seeing other people’s posts.

 Q: If you could be anything in the world, what would you be? In other words, what is your dream job?

A: A relief pitcher in the MLB.

 QWhat character from a television show or movie would you want to be best friends with and why?

 A: Michael Scott from The Office. He doesn’t like to get too serious, knows how to have a good time and would make me look extra smart.

 Q: What do you love most about the game of basketball?

A: Doesn’t take a lot to be able to play it. A ball and some form of a hoop is all that’s needed. That’s why its played in the most affluent places as well as the least affluent places in the world.

Q: What is your basketball goal for this season?

A: To win the league.

 Q: Where is your favorite place to eat in Hyde Park?

A: Valois. No question. No better bang for your buck and its delicious. I eat it every single time my dad comes up for a weekend.
