Month: December 2015

Happy Holidays!!!

As we find ourselves in the heart of the holidays, with the new year right around the corner, head coach Mike McGrath has a few words for Maroons fans…

Chicago Basketball Friends:

The team played their last game on Saturday heading into Winter Break, defeating Albion on the road. That puts us at 8-2 and we are currently ranked #22 in the country. After dropping two of our first three games, we have now won seven in a row. We have one last non-conference game at Illinois Tech on Jan 2nd, before starting UAA play on Jan 9th at Wash U.  It has been a good start and it is nice to have a little break to spend time with friends and family over the holidays, but the team is very excited about the road ahead in 2016. We hope to see you in the new year at some games!

Additionally, the team would also like to thank you for all of your support and wish you happy holidays…

 Also, a couple of notes:

* Thank you to all who have made generous contributions to the program over the past several years. This support is vital to helping us provide the best experience possible for our players and reach our goal of having the best Division III men’s basketball program in the country. Many of you should have received a brochure from the department about the new “Friends of Maroon Athletics” initiative, as we are expanding the efforts to support our athletes more aggressively. The brochure can be found here: Friends of Maroon Athletics.

If you would like to make a contribution to the program this year, please use the following link: Make A Gift.  As always, your support is greatly appreciated.

 * Alumni – do not forget to plan on “Legends Weekend” (Jan 22-24).  Invitations will follow in early January, but the major event will be a reception in the Berwanger Trophy Room at 6:00pm prior to our game vs NYU at 8:00pm. The annual alumni game will take place on Saturday.

MAROON PRIDE!

Meet The Freshmen: Justin Jackson

And last, but certainly not least…

Justin Jackson

6-4. 205. Marietta, Georgia.

What is your favorite part of going to school at UChicago so far, and why?

Definitely living in the city of Chicago and being a part of the Hyde Park community. I’m from the suburbs and it’s been great getting a taste of the city life.

What is your favorite thing to eat, and from where?

A Big Mac from McDonald’s. It’s full of nutrients and it tastes amazing.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?

I would travel to Hawaii. It would be great to sit on the beach everyday, relax and maybe surf occasionally.

You can only listen to one musical artist for the next month. Who would you choose, and what body of work?

Childish Gambino, Because the Internet.

Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or Snapchat? Why?

Snapchat. It gives you the most freedom to socialize with who you want, when you want.

Who is your current celebrity crush and why?

Sofia Richie, because who doesn’t like a Cali girl?

What show can you watch over and over again and why?

The Blacklist. It’s full of action and always keeps me intrigued.

And there you have it. Catch these guys on the court, and snapping away throughout the season…

Meet The Freshmen: Ryan Jacobsen

Up next, No. 45.

Ryan Jacobsen

6-5. 190. St. Paul, Minnesota.

What is your favorite part of going to school at UChicago so far, and why?

My favorite part of going to UChicago is that it is actually a fun place to be. The academics are top notch but that doesn’t stop a lot of kids here from hanging out and having a good time.

Assemble a starting lineup of any current NBA players, and explain your choices.

  1. Steph Curry– no explanation needed.
  2. Andrew Wiggins-I’m from Minnesota and like the Twolves…plus his bounce is ridiculous.
  3. Gordon Hayward-he’s my go to 2k player and usually gets me the win when Noah and I play in our dorm.
  4. Blake Griffin-“he didn’t even stretch thoooo.”
  5. DeMarcus Cousins-Boogie is a beast and just destroys whoever is guarding him.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?

I would go to Italy. I went there for two weeks the summer before junior year with my high school and it was awesome. The architecture and culture there was really interesting and I would love to go back.

You can only listen to one musical artist for the next month. Who would you choose, and what body of work?

Kanye. You wouldn’t even have to force me to do it because I would probably be doing it by myself already.

Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or Snapchat? Why?

Snapchat. Now that I’m at college and away from my high school friends, this is probably the social media outlet that lets me stay in touch with them most easily.

What show can you watch over and over again and why?

White Collar. The cliff-hangers in the show are just ridiculous. I can never watch one episode at a time and am currently going through the show on Netflix for the third time.

Where is your favorite place to hang out in Hyde Park and why?

53rd street. It’s nice to get off campus to eat and the trips to Harold’s or Valois with my friends are always fun.

Clearly Harold’s is a team favorite…

Meet The Freshmen: Max Jacobs

Ready to learn more about the newest Maroons? Another freshman is on deck.

Max Jacobs

6-2. 180. Short Hills, New Jersey.

Assemble a starting lineup of any current NBA players, and explain your choices.

  • Jeremy Lin (being half-Chinese, he’s my inspiration)
  • D’Angelo Russell (can dish it out and he’s a shifty lefty)
  • Vince Carter (I loved watching him play on the Nets…hands down the best dunker of all-time)
  • Reggie Evans (does the dirty work, gets boards and then there’s this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cbhctXsPPqM)
  • Richard Jefferson (savvy vet, used to play for the Nets and although he’s 35, he climbs the invisible ladder every now and then)

We would run the Millburn High School Princeton offense and tear up the NBA.

What is your favorite thing to eat, and from where?

Margherita Pizza from Arturos in Maplewood, NJ.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?

Home (Millburn, NJ). I’d love to travel to Peru at some point though…I’ve always wanted to see Machu Picchu.

You can only listen to one musical artist for the next month. Who would you choose, and what body of work?

J. Cole – 2014 Forest Hills Drive.

Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or Snapchat? Why?

Snapchat. Definitely the funniest form of social media and you can choose who you communicate with.

What show can you watch over and over again and why?

Entourage. Best feel-good show out there. Makes you want to live Vinnie’s life.

Where is your favorite place to hang out in Hyde Park and why?

Best fried-chicken in Chicago.

Who doesn’t love candy, right? We’re right there with you, Reggie.

Meet The Freshmen: Noah Karras

With a new season comes new players on the court, and the UChicago Maroons are no exception! This year, the team has brought on four new guys and it’s time for you to meet them.

So, with that said, a Maroon Minute is starting a new series: Meet The Freshmen. The four newest additions were asked to answer a few questions of their choosing, in order for you to learn a little more about them.

Noah Karras

6-4. 180. Guard. Lake Forest, Illinois.

What part of your game are you best at, and what in your opinion still needs work?

The best part about my game is my ability to shoot. I need to work on getting stronger so I don’t get bullied in the paint.

Assemble a starting lineup of any current NBA players, and explain your choices.

PG– Damian Lillard. He’s clutch, smooth with the ball, and can put it down on a defender’s head.

SG– Klay Thompson. One of the best shooter’s in the league. He gets after it on both ends of the floor. People have also told me I look like him.

SF– Paul Pierce. My favorite player of all time.

PF– Dirk Nowitzki. Love his post game and he’s a gamer.

C– Boogie (DeMarcus Cousins). He’s just the man. No explanation needed.

What is your favorite thing to eat, and from where?

My favorite thing to eat is Chilaquiles. Anywhere they serve it I’m a big fan but there are some joints back home that never disappoint.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?

If I could travel anywhere it would have to Martha’s Vineyard. It’s definitely my favorite place to be and I love the ocean.

Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or Snapchat? Why?

Snapchat, no doubt. It’s a fun way to talk to people.

Who is your current celebrity crush and why?

Sacha Baron Cohen- one of the funniest guys to ever walk this earth and by far my favorite comedian.

Where is your favorite place to hang out in Hyde Park and why?

My favorite place to hangout in Hyde Park is Harold’s! Best fried chicken east of the Mississippi.

So there you have it. Time to start calling Noah, Klay 2.0. Stay tuned for more!
