Offseason Opportunities: Porter Veach

No. 4, Porter Veach, Ascendance Capital Partners

A senior from Winnetka, Illinois, Porter Veach worked in private equity this summer.

“This summer I worked at a private equity firm in downtown Chicago, called Ascendance Capital Partners. My responsibilities there included building financial models to underwrite new deals, writing up investment memorandum for the investment committee, and doing market research. A lot of investment bankers eventually graduate to private equity, so I was quite lucky to land a summer position at this firm.”

So how did the guard land this opportunity?

“I applied through Handshake, which is a great resource. Employers generally seem to love recruiting UChicago students, as they know we are not only bright, but can handle an intense workload.”

And what was Veach’s favorite part of the job?

“Overall, I’d say my favorite part of the job was building models. This was the most intellectually challenging activity I did, and I enjoyed the work I had to put into it.”

As for staying in shape for the year ahead, the Illinois-native was sure to do that too.

“This offseason, I was able to workout with some of my former high school teammates, who now play both college and professional basketball. It was a great way to stay in game shape, and get ready for the upcoming season ahead.”
